How can schools concretely act on children's health literacy?
A study published in Health Promotion International, conducted with 2,325 students, 552 teachers, and 46 primary schools, provides new insights.
3 essential lessons to remember:
1. Comprehensive health promotion policy in schools: Considering health in the various dimensions of school life (organisation, teaching, physical and social environment, relationships with families and the community) is associated with better health literacy among students.
2. Training and well-being of teachers: Training teachers in health promotion and their well-being are associated with a better ability of students to find, understand, evaluate, and use health information.
3. Consideration of the socio-economic context: The school's health promotion policy and teachers' resources remain associated with better health literacy after accounting for socio-economic differences.
Results that support the approach of Health Promoting Schools: acting on the entire school environment, not just individual behaviours.
